Sir Anthony Blunt, a pillar of the British establishment, a distinguished art historian and an adviser to the queen, was in 1979 publicly acknowledged to be one of four Cambridge spies, recruited by the Soviet secret intelligence. His Guide to Baroque Rome has a general introduction which traces the origins and development of the Roman baroque style. The guide, arranged alphabetically, begins with churches and continues with palaces, villas, fountains, monuments and other Baroque architecture in the city of Rome. Each entry, often accompanied by a contemporary engraving or plan, begins with a bibliography and is followed by a description of the founding of the building, its design and construction and later alteration. All features of significance—architecture, decoration, painting, and sculpture—are described, attributed, and dates where possible.
