Over the past weeks, students have participated in the celebrations of a few solemnities. This week brought the celebration of the Transitus of St. Benedict on Monday, and the Annunciation on Thursday.
On Monday, students were relieved of their class obligations in honor of the Transitus (“Passing over” into heaven) of St. Benedict and participated in the day’s liturgies in the basilica with the monastic community. Mass was celebrated by Abbot Gregory. First Vespers were prayed in the evening. Students enjoyed the liturgies and the free day, which gave them time to rest and enjoy the sunshine.
On Tuesday, the vocations committee sponsored a showing of The Shoes of the Fisherman. Students enjoyed pizza and snacks during the movie. Events like this give students the chance to view religious and vocation films and the opportunity to participate in activities that provide for fraternal time.
The Conception Seminary Knights of Columbus council sponsored a holy hour in the seminary oratory on the eve of the Annunciation with particular intentions going to the souls of the unborn. First Vespers of the Annunciation were prayed in the basilica on the same evening. The following day, students and monks gathered for Mass in the basilica for the Solemnity of the Annunciation.
Thursday, the Tabor College Choir gave a special choral performance in the basilica. They came through the hard work of seminarian Luke Thielen of Salina, a former student of Tabor College. Their repertoire was eclectic: Gregorian chant, polyphony, and contemporary arrangements (even by their own director!). The choir joined the students and monks for Mass on Friday, and were happy to perform in the basilica as the peak of their singing tour.
Local Knights councils sponsored a Poker Run in the area. All were invited to participate. Participants were given two hours to visit five different locations: Mozingo Lake boat dock, St. Columba parish in Conception Junction, Stanberry’s Rainey’s Supermarket, Barnard Roadhouse Grill, and the Maryville Wal-Mart, picking up a playing card at each. At 6:00 p.m. participants met to compare card hands. The winner received a prize of $100. Alex Gorges, a seminarian of the diocese of Wichita, was the winner.
As Holy Week approaches, students and monks prepare for the final week of class and for the liturgies to come. Classes will end on Wednesday and all will begin the Triduum retreat in preparation for Easter Sunday. Easter vacation will commence on Easter Sunday after the Vigil and students will return on the following Sunday of Divine Mercy.
