The
Spiritual Formation Program is designed to nurture the seeds of
a priestly vocation and expand each seminarian’s ability to
understand and respond to God’s call.
The
program has three components:
·
A
strong liturgical experience. Central to this is the Benedictine way of
life, which is based on the Rule of
St. Benedict. The monks, whose motto is Ora et Labora (“Pray and
Work”), gather six times a day for prayer and celebrate daily Mass.
Well crafted liturgy and a rhythm of prayer are more than priorities.
They are essential. This respect and reverence for the common prayer of
the Church is passed on to seminarians through participation and
rigorous instruction.
·
Individual
spiritual direction. Each seminarian meets with his spiritual director
twice a month to provide personal guidance and to promote a heightened
awareness of God’s presence in his life.
· An
emphasis on scriptural study and prayer. The monks call it Lectio
Divina, or holy reading. It is as central to their lives as communal
prayer, and that commitment to private prayer, whether through reading
theology and Scripture, adoration of the Blessed Sacrament or quiet
reflection, are encouraged as a way to foster intimacy with Christ.
