Sunday Reflection: To Be Disciples

by Sergio Legarreta, College 4 of the Diocese of El Paso
These last months have been very controversial for many, but as Jesus said, “Do not be terrified; for such things must happen first, but it will not immediately be the end” (Luke 21:9). We have to learn from the past and continue on with the grace of God. Instead of thinking about how one group of people rises against another or one family against another for any economic, political, or spiritual reason, we must be examples of Christ. In order to do this, we may follow the example of the saints, such as Saint Francis.

One-day Saint Francis told two of his young friars, “Let’s go to the town to proclaim the Gospel of Christ.” At this moment, the friars were full of joy. They wanted to go out and tell the people all they had learned. They were thinking, “We are going to preach to the people how awesome the life of a friar is, and we’ll become famous.” When they were in the town, they started to help the poor, assist the sick, and walk around the town, but they never talked.

Then, Saint Francis said, “Ok, let’s go back.” Immediately, the two young friars, astonished because they hadn’t said a word, asked Saint Francis, “How are we going back if we have not proclaimed the Gospel of Christ?” Then, Francis answered, “We were proclaiming it all day with our example.”

Today, Jesus is calling us to be his disciples. Disciples, by their examples, will unite families. Disciples, by their examples, will teach people how to pray. Disciples, by their examples of love, faith, and charity, teach and bring people back to God. Today, let us be examples of Christ.
